The Spirit Ride... Making History!
Watch news coverage of the Spirit Ride across the country as many bear witness to history in the making!
What's The Spirit Ride?
The Spirit Ride is designed to draw media attention to Move-Over laws and the needless sacrifices towers and other first responders make in serving the motoring public and transportation industry. After Chip Kauffman of B/A Products first approached American Towman with an idea for a drive across America to promote Move-Over, the vision for what could take place began to grow. To date, over 300 towing companies have signed up to carry the "Spirit" by car carrier as towers continue to volunteer to participate and also lend their ideas to the project.
The "Spirit" Casket pays tribute to First Responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice working the white line while promoting public awareness of the Move Over law. "Spirit" began its journey on June 1st, 2017. The ceremonial casket relayed from carrier to carrier across the country in 140 towns and cities, drawing much attention from local media: TV, Radio and Newspaper in print and online. Click here for a sampling of TV coverage. In 2018 Spirit will be relayed in 160 towns and cities.
Towers may be part of the Spirit Ride by relaying the casket and hosting a Spirit Ride Ceremony and the truck procession that follows. It takes a proactive commitment by the host tower to make the Ride successful. The tower will select a ceremony site, a procession route, enlist the participation of other First Responders and towing companies, and also contact local media. On the other hand, a tower may opt to simply relay the casket to the next tower on the Route.
The host towers benefit from this campaign because of its focus onto the safety issues of working the roadside, the relationship-building at play with other First Responders, and the Media attention achieved for the Spirit Ride’s mission. Teaming with the Spirit Ride Command Team, host towers became effective spoke-persons educating the public on the Move Ove law and the dangers of working the white line.
Towers may still sign up for the Spirit Ride this January and February. Check the Map and the 2018 Route (Green line) to see where you may fit in.
