What's The Spirit Ride?
Many are calling the Spirit Ride America's Traveling Memorial Day for First Responders. Created by American Towman Magazine, the Ride's mission is to promote public awareness of the Move Over laws while honoring fallen first responders killed on the roadside. In 2017 and 2018, the Spirit casket relayed in 310 cities, involving processions of 10,000 tow trucks, fire trucks, EMS and police vehicles. A ceremony honoring fallen first responders was held at each relay station.
The custom built and painted ceremonial casket, named Spirit, pays tribute to First Responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice working the white line while promoting public awareness of the Move Over Law that was designed to protect them. "Spirit" was relayed in 310 cities throughout 2017-2018, drawing much attention from local media: TV, Radio and Newspaper in print and online, scoring over 700 articles and 120 TV news reports. Click here for a sampling of TV coverage. The Spirit Ride hopes to resume in 2019.
Towers may be part of the Spirit Ride by relaying the casket, hosting a Spirit Ride Ceremony, leading the truck procession that follows, or simply joining one. It takes a proactive commitment by the host tower to make Spirit Ride successful. The tower will select a ceremony site, a procession route, enlist the participation of other First Responders and towing companies, and also contact local media. A tower may opt to simply relay the casket to the next tower on the Route.
The host towers benefit from this campaign because of the relationship-building at play with other First Responders, and the Media attention achieved for the Spirit Ride’s mission. Teaming with the Spirit Ride Command Team, host towers became effective spokespeople, educating TV viewers and newspaper readers on the Move Over law and the dangers of working the white line.
Spirit Ride is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) venture. We need contributions from all Spirit Riders for the campaign to continue. When you sign up to participate, pledge a dollar amount you can afford, $500 and above. You will make that contribution once you are chosen for the 2019 Route.
Welcome to the Spirit Ride!
